It’s best to catch behavior that has the potential to reflect badly on you and your brand before it becomes common knowledge. You should never conduct background checks in a way that betrays an employee’s trust. Conduct them in a transparent and fair way for all employees, from the top down. Employees appreciate that their employer is holding everyone to the same standards. These actions create an atmosphere and culture of accountability and trust, and future employees will know the company only hires safe, skilled, and responsible workers.

Running a background check every two to five years is a good policy, but the frequency with which you run background checks on current employees depends on your company and industry’s particular needs. Regardless, it’s always a wise policy, and one that pays back the company and its employees with multiple benefits.
