Why Does My Subaru Feel So Bumpy While Driving?

Subarus are known for providing comfortable driving experiences, whether you’re on the highway or an off-road trail in the backwoods. If your Subaru feels less stable than usual, it could be due to damaged or compromised components. Learn some reasons why your Subaru may feel bumpy while driving.

Worn Shocks

Shock absorbers are critical components in your Subaru’s suspension system, especially if you go off-roading occasionally. These cylinder-shaped components filled with air or liquid connect to the vehicle’s suspension. As the vehicle drives over bumpy roads or obstacles, the suspension moves up and down, and the shock absorbers limit the force of impact from these movements with air or liquid for a smoother ride. Damaged or compromised shocks won’t mitigate as much force and lead to a bumpier ride.

Broken Struts

One of the most common signs your Subaru needs new assembled struts is a bumpy ride. Struts are similar to shock absorbers and are part of your Subaru’s suspension system. However, they control the spring movement of the system.

Assembled struts minimize the spring movement, or bouncing, in your Subaru’s suspension system. If the struts are broken or damaged, it’ll result in a bumpier ride and unpredictable handling characteristics.

Overinflated Tires

Another reason why your Subaru feels so bumpy while driving could be the tires. The typical concern with car tires is that they’re underinflated. However, overinflation can be just as problematic.

If there’s too much air in the tires, they become less malleable, so when you drive over bumps and cracks in the road, the tires are more rigid and will bounce more. If your Subaru feels bouncy, double-check that the tires are within their recommended PSI range. You can find this specification in the owner’s manual or printed inside the driver-side door jamb.

Compromised Brake Pads

If your vehicle shakes and vibrates when you apply the brakes, it’s likely due to an issue with the brake pads. They apply pressure, or friction, to the brake rotors and wheels of your Subaru, which helps you slow or stop the vehicle.

If the brake pads are warped or damaged, the pressure when braking is uneven on the rotors and the wheel, which causes the vehicle to wobble or vibrate. If you feel a wobble or bump when you apply the brakes, you should replace the pads or rotors as soon as possible.
