Top 3 Ways To Honor a Veteran That You Know
Share This

If you have a friend or loved one who is a veteran, you should learn how to honor them properly. There are several ways to show your respect and appreciation, but some aren’t as obvious as others. Luckily, we’re here to help you figure out how to best honor them in ways they wouldn’t expect. Learn more about the top three ways to honor a veteran below.

Thank Them for Serving

How often do we overlook just saying “thank you” to the veterans in our lives? It’s important to show appreciation for what they’ve done for us and expressing our gratitude means a lot to them—more than you might know. Think how meaningful it would be for your veteran family member or friend to come over, see an American flag proudly displayed outside your home as a show of patriotism, and then to be welcomed in with a gracious, heartfelt greeting. “I just wanted you to know that I’m grateful for your service” is a simple but sincere sentiment that will resonate with them long after the visit is over. Can you imagine how much a service member must sacrifice? Living far away from family, often in harm’s way? Keep these things in mind and say thank you.

Send a Care Package

When it’s time to show appreciation for the veteran in your life, food is one of the best ways to do this. That is the way to everyone’s heart, right? Sending a care package is a wonderful way to show your favorite veteran that you care. Alternatively, you could offer them a meal at a restaurant or invite them to dinner at your home and give them a toast in their honor. Spend some time asking them about their tenure there if it’s not too sensitive a subject. This is a great way to honor a veteran you know.

Donate to a Veteran’s Cause

Various charities like the Wounded Warrior Project seek to help ease the suffering of veterans through various mental health and advocacy programs and initiatives. Many of these charities help our service members navigate the Veteran’s Association bureaucracy. We owe our warriors care and concern—that’s the least we can do. Now go thank a veteran. You may just make their day.
